Deb Hellman has been keeping other people's books since before most online bookkeeping companies existed. Here is how she thinks about the work, and why it matters that she does.
Twenty-five years in corporate accounting. Fifteen running this firm.
Deb has an accounting degree and spent twenty-five years doing accounting inside companies, across more industries than she can list without looking. In 2011 she started Hellman Enterprises to do the same work for businesses too small to have an accounting department and too important to get it wrong.
She still personally reviews every client's books, monthly or quarterly depending on the engagement. The team does the production. Deb does the judgment.
Clients tend to stay. The longest has been with her over ten years. Most of the new ones arrive referred, and a good share of those referrals come from CPAs, who send the clients whose books they need fixed and then kept clean.
In 2026 the monthly bookkeeping side of the practice got its own name, Go To My Bookkeeper, so it could be explained in one line. It is the same firm. This site is the company. That one is the service.
Bookkeeping is an unlicensed field. That should worry you.
Anyone can call themselves a bookkeeper. There is no licence, no exam, no board. A weekend of QuickBooks training is not accounting training, and it shows up later, when the CPA opens the file.
The online bookkeeping industry has made this worse, not better. You cannot get a person on the phone. Questions go unanswered. Corrections the CPA needs before filing do not happen, or happen wrong. We hear the same story from new clients so often we have a name for it: the bookkeeping scam.
The fix is not more software. It is someone with actual accounting training who answers the phone.
That is the whole business model. It is not complicated. It is just rare.
Three things we hold ourselves to.

We answer.
Call or text, and you get an answer in a timely manner, from someone who knows your file. If the answer is "I need to look," you get that, and then you get the real one. We ask for the same respect for our time in return, and it works well for everyone.

We work with your CPA, not around them.
Every CPA has a way they want the books set up and expenses classified. We find out what it is and do it that way. Year end then becomes an easy task instead of a negotiation. If you do not have a CPA, we know good ones.

We say the uncomfortable thing.
A loan booked as income. Inventory that has gone negative. A payroll tax that was never filed. You will hear about it from us early, in plain language, with what we would do about it. That is the part clients pay for. The categorizing is just how we earn the right to say it.
When you need a CPA.
We do not prepare tax returns. We are not licensed to, and we would not want to be the ones who both keep the books and sign the return. For tax preparation, planning, and the consultations that go with them, we refer clients to Bruce, a CPA we have worked alongside for years. He gets clean books from us; you get someone who already knows how they were built.
